The Nike Kobe 8 Protro “Shanghai Fireworks” is once again drawing attention from sneaker collectors and basketball fans. The original version was released in 2013 as a China-exclusive model and became known for both its limited distribution and colourful appearance.
The Protro edition keeps the signature visual elements that defined the original. The engineered mesh upper combines Laser Orange, Safety Orange and red tones, while a detailed graphic pattern creates a fireworks-inspired effect.
One of the most significant changes is hidden beneath the upper. The original Kobe 8 featured Lunarlon cushioning, but Nike has updated the Protro version with embedded React foam. The new cushioning approach is intended to offer a responsive feel while improving durability.
The colourway also represents part of Kobe Bryant’s connection with Chinese basketball culture. Its original release took place around his 2013 China tour, when Kobe remained an especially influential figure among basketball fans throughout China.
The limited nature of the original release made the sneaker a challenging acquisition for many collectors. As supply became harder to find, the pair gained a reputation as a desirable Kobe 8 colourway.
The Protro version gives the Shanghai Fireworks design a fresh opportunity. While the visual identity remains recognisable, the updated cushioning brings a modern element to a sneaker with a strong place in Kobe’s footwear history.
